White Spotted Butterfly

As a mixed media artist, I look to the natural world not as a scientist, but as a storyteller exploring evolution and human experience. My paintings rely on deep layering to prompt conversations about memory, ritual, and permanence. Each canvas begins with an unconventional foundation that provides dynamic variations in color and texture.

This current series reflects my close study of the White Admiral butterfly, which graced my studio surroundings this past summer. I am captivated by the dual identity written onto its wings, featuring a striking, bold dorsal pattern that mimics toxic species to deter predators while in flight, contrasted by a masterfully camouflaged underside that protects it when at rest. By translating these biological defenses into abstract, textured layers, my work investigates the tension between our public vulnerabilities and our hidden survival instincts.
